The desert reverberates with deadly heat.  We only see the illusion, sheets of quenching rain pour down, nature is thriving and the rain is creating an ocean. In life we often see what we want to see, we see quenching rain when in truth, dishearteningly, it’s only raining sand.

Typically, I completely steer away from being literal in my work. In this piece, using micro sand as a medium to depict raining sand allows the viewer to experience the moment of disillusionment when upon closer study of the work they are struck with the realisation that the medium is in truth sand.

The message articulated in the work’s aesthetic, the bright, vibrant colours of the top layer of the piece intentionally mislead the viewer and belie the anguish of its narrative. Contrary to its aesthetic, this piece is underpinned disillusionment and disappointment depicted in the slithers of desert reverberating across the piece.

Abstract Expressionism

The freedom of technique with a preference for dramatically large canvases, and a desire to give spontaneous expression to the unconscious. The artist suppresses conscious control over the making process, allowing the unconscious mind to have great sway.

About the Artist

Received an Honourable Mention in the Art and Colour Magazine International Open Competition 2024

"In the 1990s while living on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, I commenced art training at the Chisholm Institute with a focus on Fine Art, in particular mixed media and old school Graphic Design well before it all became digitised. A career of creative roles ensued within both the advertising and TV Post Production industries where I ustilised my graphic design and photography skills.

Always drawn towards creative work environments, for the last 15 years I have been working in the Interior Design / Architecture industry. Life has now come full circle and I am now revisiting my passion for contemporary art, in particular Abstract Expressionism."
